A group of dermatologists pulled together what has been published on low-dose oral minoxidil, the pill version of a drug that started life as a blood pressure medication and is now prescribed for hair loss at a fraction of that original dose. The review covers roughly 0.5 to 2.5 milligrams a day for women and 2.5 to 5 milligrams a day for men. Your clients are far more likely to arrive already taking this than to ask you about it first, which is the reason to know what the literature says about it.

The side effects the review reports, with how often they turned up, are unwanted hair growth elsewhere on the body in about 15 percent of people and more often in women, fluid retention and swelling in 1.3 to 10 percent, dizziness in 1 to 1.7 percent, a faster heartbeat in 0.9 to 4 percent, and headache in 0.4 to 9 percent. It also describes a temporary shedding phase in 16 to 32 percent of people, starting two to four weeks in and lasting three to six weeks. The authors write that most people need no routine lab testing before or during treatment, and that extra care belongs with anyone who already has heart rhythm problems, high blood pressure or a history of dizziness on standing. One thing to know about the paper itself: it is a narrative review, meaning the authors gathered and summarized the literature by their own judgment rather than following a preset search protocol the way a systematic review does.
